Principal's Report November 2014

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Farewell to our Year 12’s
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2014! It is an important event that marks the culmination of 12 years of education, exams, study, work placement, of completing projects and friendships. Achieving a Western Australian Certificate of Education demonstrates our students are able to set goals and have the drive to achieve them. I wish all the students the very best for the future in their endeavours; I look forward to hearing about your achievements in the years to come. To the parents who are leaving BSHS, thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children, your support and contribution to the school. You will always be an important part of our community. The graduation itself was a very special night that showcased our students and the community of BSHS. I would like to thank all staff at BSHS for their hard work in the organisation of the event. I would also like to thank staff for the organisation of the activities leading up to the night; Staff v Students Soccer, Dress up day, Breakfast and the Fashion Parade. It allowed our students to celebrate in a mature and respectful manner.
Other Celebrations
Our Specialised Music Program delivered an outstanding performance befitting the End of Year concert for 2014. One piece in particular that was performed with the Busselton Brass Band was amazing. It was evident the countless hours of rehearsals both as an individual and band were undertaken to be able to perform at that level. Congratulations to all staff and students involved. I would also like to thank the school community, in particular the Music Support Group. The MSG work tirelessly to support the various events both financially and operationally.
On 25 October the BSHS Parents & Citizens Association, in partnership with Geographe Ford, held a fundraiser that involved trying to achieve 50 Test Drives in a four hour period. A car wash was held in the new BSHS car park and a sausage sizzle was also available. I am pleased to announce that we managed to achieve the 50 Test Drives and raise $2,350 for the P&C. This will support a number of student events and projects over the coming years. I would like to thank the community for coming down and testing out the cars. I would also like to thank the parents and students who helped out and supported the event. Finally to Andrew Ingrey and his team at Geographe Ford, thanks for allowing us to be involved in this event. The P&C plays a vital role in supporting our students? education. If you would like to know more or become involved please contact the school for more details on 9754 9333.
Finally, congratulations to Ms Shade, Ms Mutch and the students from Geographe Training who were finalists in the State Mental Health Good Outcomes Awards 2014. They work tirelessly for their students and this is welcome recognition for all that they do.
Transition to an IPS Board
Our transition to an Independent Public School in 2015 is well underway. We are already utilising a number of flexibilities such as staffing and finance to better cater to the needs of our students at BSHS. We will be employing a Year 7/8 Head of Year to help manage the transition for our students into High School; this would not have been possible if we were not IPS. An integral part of becoming an IPS involves the establishment of an effectively functioning school board. The board is responsible for endorsing the school budget, business plan and reviewing how the school is operating. They also provide advice and support to the school. The new board will begin operation in 2015. As a part of the transition two Parent positions are now vacant. Information about the IPS School Board nomination process can be found in this newsletter. If you would like to apply or need further information please contact the school on 9754 9333.
This final term is now upon us. BSHS requests and greatly appreciates the support from parents concerning adherence to the school dress code. As we are now moving into summer months it is anticipated that inappropriate jumpers and other non-uniform items should not be seen on school grounds. Processes are in place to ensure all students wear the correct uniform. Uniform is important as it establishes and promotes a sense of team and pride for BSHS both inside and outside the school. It also minimises unnecessary competition and helps to focus the students on their learning.
There are still a number of events to complete Term 4.
> Year 12's sitting their final exams and we wish them the best of luck.
> A Year 10 RAP camp to reward good behaviour and attendance will take place later on in the term.
> The final assemblies for the remaining Year Groups will also occur and I hope a number of parents will be in attendance.
As our school year rapidly draws to a close I am keen for the above special activities and all lessons in classrooms to focus on enriching student learning and positive behaviour as the priority, so we can finish 2014 on high note for the whole school community.
Kind Regards,
Dainon Couzic

Principal's Report December 2014

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

The 2014 school year is drawing to an end; what a busy and exciting year it has been for all involved. There have been a number of key achievements that demonstrate Busselton Senior High School’s successful progression forward:

•    In Term 1 the Expert Review Group (ERG) deemed that we were operating as a normal High School should. Key targets were met as a result of this process.
•    In Term 3 BSHS underwent a financial audit which resulted in a ‘Good’ rating overall, validating we are managing our money well and our financial processes are working efficiently.
•    As a result of a rigorous selection process it was announced in Term 3 that BSHS will begin to operate as an Independent Public School in 2015. The school now has more flexibility to make decisions to meet the needs of our students.

These are major achievements that the entire school community should be proud of. To ensure that we continue improving and move forward, the staff, students and school community have developed the new Business Plan which sets out our vision, values and improvement areas that we will concentrate on over the next three years. As a result of this whole school community consultation process BSHS’s new vision is:

‘Busselton Senior High School will be known as an outstanding, inclusive school that effectively serves the needs of our community. High standards will be achieved by excellence in teaching and learning, developing respectful relationships and delivering curriculum that challenges and wholly engages all of our students.’

We will work towards this vision by operating and modelling our new values which are:

Excellence        Respect        Integrity        Responsibility

We will endeavour to achieve this vision by implementing a number of key strategies and achieving our three year targets that fit under our four new Priorities that we will concentrate on:

Priority 1 – Successful Students
Priority 2 – Excellence in Teaching and Leadership
Priority 3 – Engaging the School Community
Priority 4 – A Safe, Supportive and Inclusive Learning Culture

I would like to thank the staff, students, the P&C, School Board and wider community for being involved in this process. Now comes the hard part; ensuring we action the strategic directions we have set out. An electronic copy will be provided to all parents in 2015. I know all staff are excited about working with the school community to achieve this vision. I certainly am.
Our other successes from 2014 include:
•    BSHS was named VET School of the Year at the State Training Awards
•    New car park and enhancement of the front of the school.
•    Numerous Queens’ Cup Music Trophies.
•    Certificate 4 Nursing is now offered at the school, increasing our Senior School course offerings.
•    Ellie Sewell has been selected into the Perspectives Art Exhibition.
•    There have been numerous camps, excursions, concerts, Drama production and competitions and other extracurricular activities that have also value added to the students lives at BSHS. A big thankyou to all staff that have been involved.

Students will receive their reports shortly. It is important they remember that the report is a summary of where the student has been - it is not the end game. Encourage your child to reflect on the report and use the information to plan for improvement and build even better results in the year ahead.

Finally, I would to thank all the school community for their support over 2014. Best wishes to all of you. May the festive season bring you much joy and keep you safe. I look forward to seeing you all in 2015.

Kind Regards,

Dainon Couzic

Principal's Report February 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2015 school year, our first as an Independent Public School. It promises to be an exciting and eventful time for us all at BSHS. I would like to formally welcome both the Year 7 and 8 students and their families as they begin their learning journey at our school. Both year groups have settled in well. This is a testament to your child’s resilience, your support and the staff from both the Primary School and High School for ensuring the transition process went smoothly. Thank you to all who were involved in this important process.

Results
Busselton Senior High School is an institution that encourages high standards in teaching and learning. Our 2014 results clearly demonstrate we are catering to all students in the ATAR (University) and VET Pathways. In 2014 our Year 12 students collectively achieved the following results:

75.5%  Median ATAR (Best in 5 years),
80% Student Achievement of CERT II Qualifications,
85% Attainment Rate (Best in 5 Years and a 10% increase on all previous years).

Congratulations to all staff and students involved, as many students achieved results above their predicted scores. Our Attainment Rate is the major area that we will be focusing on in the immediate future. This is a measure of how many students completed a Cert II qualification or gained a 55% and above ATAR. If a student achieves either of these they will be able to enter university or transition into TAFE or a career. This means our students have a definite pathway they can follow when they finish secondary schooling. BSHS will be striving to improve our rate to above 90% in the coming years.

These are wonderful results. However, it is now time to look to 2015 and the many challenges that will no doubt unfold as the year progresses. I believe the school will rise to these challenges, and the class of 2015 will also achieve some sterling results.

Independent Public School
2015 marks the beginning of BSHS operating as an Independent Public School. We now have more autonomy and flexibility to ensure we provide the best possible educational experience to all our students. The school has already utilised a number of these flexibilities for 2015:

Staffing: As an IPS we were able to select and appoint our own staff. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome and introduce the following 12 new staff members:
Kelly Anderson – Head of Year 7/8,
Lisa Harding – Heath and Physical Education,
Ross Ligtermoet – Health and Physical Education /Science and IT,
Naomi Kerr – English,
Jodi Smith – English,
Alan White – English,
Daniel Wheeler – Society and Environment,
Patricia Waters – Art/Society and Environment,
Deb Cartwright – Science,
Dan Martain – Maths,
Chelsea Homer – Student Services Support Officer - Attendance,
Deb Anderson – School Psychologist.

We are excited to have these new staff in our school and all have fitted in seamlessly. You can find out more information about these new staff members in an article in this newsletter.

Staffing Structure: The school has also been able to take advantage of the financial flexibilities to move resources to the greatest area of need. With the transition of Year 7 to High School and the increase in student numbers, the school has restructured our administration and student services to further support our student learning environment. The school has created three sub schools and this structure can be seen below:
Year 7 & 8 - Deputy Principal Kelly Anderson with Y7/8 Year Coordinator Ellie Ward.
Year 9 & 10 - Associate Principal Colin Sheffield with Y9/10 Year Coordinator Geoff Holt.
Year 11/12 - Associate Principal David Gault with Y11/12 Year Coordinator Deb Brandt and VET Coordinator Connie Watson

Our student class sizes in Years 7, 8 and 9 average approximately 25 which is the lowest it has been in several years; this will further enhance the learning environment.

Business Plan 2015-2017: As an IPS, BSHS must undertake a rigorous school improvement cycle. The entire school community undertook an in-depth review and I thank community members for their input in deciding on the future directions of the school. The Business Plan has now been completed and the following priorities will guide us to make sure BSHS continues to improve and deliver the best possible education for your child. If you would like a copy of the Business Plan, please visit the office to pick one up.

Priority 1 – Successful Students: BSHS’s mission is to provide opportunities and support to all our students to ensure they achieve and succeed.

Priority 2 – Excellence in Teaching and Leadership: BSHS will build a successful Professional Learning Community that is focussed on research based teaching, learning and leadership strategies that will allow teachers to develop professionally and, ultimately, impact on student learning.

Priority 3 – Engaging the School Community: BSHS actively enhances student learning by partnering with parents, other education and training institutions, local industry, and community organisations. In partnership with the wider school community we will support each other to achieve our vision.

Priority 4 – A Safe, Supportive and Inclusive Learning Culture: A safe, supportive and inclusive learning  culture will be developed by building positive relationships, embedding our school values and supporting each other so everybody within the school community feels safe and valued.

Positive Behaviour Support
2015 also marks the beginning of the Positive Behaviour Support program or PBS. Our acronym or catch phrase is to keep things R.E.A.L. at Busselton Senior High School. To be R.E.A.L. means:
To show Respect by listening to, & following instructions, using appropriate language and manners & greeting each other positively;
It means having Empathy by showing acceptance and understanding of others and taking a stand against bullying;
It means striving to Achieve by performing tasks to the best of our ability and seeking feedback to improve;
Endeavouring to Learn: by being engaged in classroom activities and coming prepared and equipped to class.
Students will be taught the concepts of Respect, Empathy, Achieve and Learn.  Teachers will assist your child in developing these skills over 2015. More information on PBS can be found on the school website and in future newsletters.

Expectations
The beginning of the school year is an opportune time to establish expectations and parameters for academic and social behaviour for all students.  From the outset, I want to reinforce this School’s commitment to providing an engaging learning environment. This is a commitment that will only be realised when students, teachers and parent/caregivers work together to achieve positive outcomes.

At BSHS we maintain that every student has the right to learn and not to have their learning disrupted through the inappropriate behaviours of others.  All students, staff and parents deserve the right to be treated with respect and courtesy. Consequently there are some reciprocal obligations on the part of students, who must take responsibility for their learning and behaviour:

Attendance - For students to be successful in their learning programs regular attendance is essential and expected.  Students should be absent only due to illness or unavoidable circumstances. Please see the Attendance article in this newsletter for further information on the dangers of your child not attending school;

Dress Standards - Whilst I am pleased to say that the vast majority of students comply with the prescribed dress standards, each year a handful of students attempt to push the boundaries by wearing inappropriate clothing. Wearing correct uniform creates a sense of pride and identity for students at our school. The key components of what is acceptable and what is not are presented in this newsletter. The wearing of school uniform is mandatory at all government schools;

Behaviour – Students cannot learn or improve if they do not behave and focus during lessons. While the school is proactive in our intervention and prevention strategies, it is important to emphasise that fighting, bullying, verbal abuse and harassment of others is completely unacceptable at Busselton Senior High School. All staff will endeavour to help students make correct choices about their behaviour and assist them to improve. We ask parents to support and work with the school when behaviour management issues arise.

The staff at BSHS look forward to maintaining positive relationships with parents as we engage students in their learning during 2015. There are some exciting times ahead at BSHS; I thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to seeing you at school events throughout the year.
Kind Regards,

Principal's Report March 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Being a nine week term has meant the weeks have just flown by. The beginning of our Independent Public School journey has gone smoothly and we are already seeing the benefits. Student numbers are the highest they have been in several years which has meant an increase in resources; class sizes in Year 7-10 are now lower than normal, thus creating an optimal learning environment for students. Most students have responded well to the expectations I outlined in the previous issue of ‘School Speak’; however I think it is an opportune time to reiterate these expectations. All students must take responsibility for their learning and behaviour by:

Attending School: Letters have already been sent out to parents of students who fall below 90% attendance. If a student fails to improve their attendance rate, a meeting to support parents and develop an attendance action plan will be organised.
Dress Standards:  Whilst I am pleased to say that the vast majority of students comply with the prescribed dress standards, each year a handful of students attempt to push the boundaries by wearing inappropriate clothing such as black shorts. Please remind students that wearing correct uniform creates a sense of pride and team work amongst the school community.
Behaviour: It is important to emphasise that fighting, bullying, verbal abuse and harassment of others is completely unacceptable at BSHS. Staff will support students to take responsibility for their behaviour and assist them to make the right choices. We ask parents to support us and work with us when issues do arise.

Beach Carnival and School Ball
On 27 February I attended my first Beach Carnival. Since I arrived at Busselton Senior High School I have heard that this is an amazing event that unites the entire school community. I was not to be disappointed with over 478 participants attending the event at Meelup Beach. All students participated and a sense of teamwork was very evident throughout all year groups. I was extremely proud to be a member of the BSHS Community; I know staff and students shared the same feelings. Congratulations to Geographe who took out the day’s honours and to Vasse who received the most R.E.A.L tickets on the day.

On 21 March the annual Year 12 School Ball was held.  The theme was ‘Burlesque’ and the students presented themselves in a very elegant and mature way on the evening. It was perhaps one of the most enjoyable balls I have had the privilege of attending.  Behaviour was exemplary and students appreciated the efforts of staff in preparing, organising and participating in the event. I am particularly impressed with the maturity of this Year 12 cohort.  Time and again they have demonstrated great qualities of leadership, compassion and a very cohesive attitude. They are very accepting of diversity. Look out for photos in the next addition of the ‘School Speak’

Interim Report and Parents Evening Years 7-9
By the time you read this newsletter you would have received either an interim report for Term 1 or attended the Year 7 to 9 Parents evening. I would like to thank staff for their efforts for undertaking this new communication initiative for parents. We felt as a school it was important to explicitly provide information on how your child is progressing this year. It is important to remember that this report provides only a snap shot of how your child is performing both academically and behaviourally in line with our R.E.A.L values. Should you have any questions or require advice on how to best support your child’s learning, please contact your child’s classroom teacher listed in the report.

BSHS Band Fete
On the 28 March at Mitchell Park between the hours of 8.30 am and 12.00 pm the Music Support Group and BSHS Music Department will be holding their annual fete. Our bands will be performing and there will be number of food and novelty stalls.

ANZAC Ceremony
2015 marks the 100 Year Centenary of the ANZAC legacy. This milestone is of special significance to all Australians as the First World War contributed to defining us as a nation. Busselton Senior High School’s ANZAC ceremony will take place on 24 April at 10.06 am (Period 2). The service is approximately one hour and is held in the school gymnasium. All parents and citizens are welcome to attend.

I hope you enjoy a safe and restful Easter Holiday break and the students return ready for Term 2 which begins on Monday 20 April (Note: There is no pupil free day on the Monday)

Kind Regards,
Dainon Couzic

Principal's Report May 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

Parent’s Evening
I would like thank all Year 7-9 parents and students who attended the Parent Evening on 24 March. The evening was held in a different format with the new interim report being distributed. I know the staff of Busselton Senior High School felt it was a valuable night and enjoyed discussing your child’s progress with you. Feedback, concerning the new format and reports, has been positive and we plan to continue this next year. Creating and sustaining positive partnerships between parents and the school is very important to us, as this community support enhances student learning.

Celebrations and Events
The last week in Term 1 was very busy. A high participation rate was exhibited at the annual Inter-house Athletics Carnival with over 95% attending. I would like to thank the Physical Education team and all other staff who worked so hard to ensure the event was a great success. The eventual winners of the carnival were ‘Blackwood’.
Students who displayed Respect, Empathy, Achievement and Learning in their interim reports were rewarded by being invited to attend the R.E.A.L excursion and incursion days. Congratulations to all those who attended. Thank you to the Year Co-ordinators and other staff involved in ensuring the students had a wonderful experience. All students who did not qualify have attended a meeting to plan for future improvement to allow them to attend next time.
Term 2 began with the 2015 School ANZAC Centenary Service. It was a very moving ceremony that encapsulated the ANZAC spirit. Our student councillors also participated in the Busselton ANZAC Service and March and they represented our school with pride. Again thank you to all those involved.
Our annual AFL game against the Clontarf Academy was played with a high level of skill shown by both teams.
Finally, over 70 students were involved in the Interschool Athletics Carnival in Bunbury. The school competed very well. Congratulations to Lachlan McKenzie and Anais Kusal who were overall champions for their division. Thanks to Mr Ligtermoet and Ms Harding for organising the event.

Newspaper Article
I would like to address the comments made in an article on Friday 1 May, concerning an incident at Busselton Senior High School, as some information was misleading and factually incorrect. The article stated that ‘students were hospitalised’. This is not the case as no party involved was admitted to hospital. I also want to reiterate that it was an isolated incident that stemmed from conflict that was occurring in the wider community, not from bullying, as was stated in the article. I always speak openly to our school community about the fact that bullying does occur at Busselton Senior High School, as it does in all schools and other areas of our society. It is a behaviour that is becoming increasingly difficult to monitor, particularly with the growing popularity of social media. As a Principal, an educator and a father, I understand the negative and destructive impact bullying can have on a child’s life.  Our staff work diligently to address and deal with all incidents that we are aware of. I want to reassure our school community that a safe and supportive learning environment exists and there is not a major bullying issue at BSHS. We have an outstanding, well-resourced Student Services Team who are trained to deal with, and support, all students with any issues that may arise. The school has a strict Behaviour Management Policy. We at BSHS support our students; we strive to provide them with a safe environment where they can grow and fully embrace their educational journey. With transparent communication and trust in BSHS, I believe we can move on positively, with a heightened awareness of any behaviour that may negatively affect our students. I encourage any member of the wider community to contact me directly with any concerns or questions they may have.

Student Assessments
A number of student assessments will be either occurring shortly, or have been completed this year. These assessments are mandated by the Department of Education and the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. They also provide a snapshot of what level your child is currently operating at. This allows the teacher to plan appropriate lessons and provide feedback to your child to further progress their learning. Year 10 Students completed their Online Literacy Numeracy Assessment (OLNA). Students have the opportunity to undertake this assessment twice a year in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students will be unable to graduate unless they pass OLNA. We will be providing you with their results in the next couple of weeks. Senior School exams will be undertaken in Week 4 and this will provide students with an idea of how they are progressing with their university-bound courses. In Week 4 the Year 9 and, for the first time, Year 7 NAPLAN will occur in High School. These results will be sent out later on in the year. Finally, there will be assessment weeks for all year groups in Week 5 (Years 7/8) and Week 6 (Years 9/10). It is important that your child begins to revise for these upcoming assessments. Their Semester 1 Report will be sent home in Week 11.

I thank you once again for your support. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Kind Regards,
Dainon Couzic,

Principal's Report June 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

Term 2 has been extremely busy with a number of key events such as the Canberra trip, Country Week, Mid-Year Concert and REAL Activities/Rewards still to occur. Students have been working well with the major focus being on assessments and course completion.

Assessment and Reporting
Assessment is often viewed, especially from the child’s perspective, as unfair, daunting and stressful; however, it is an important aspect of your child’s education. Teachers use informal and formal assessments to draw out a student’s current ability and identify any gaps in their learning. Teachers can then provide timely feedback and plan personalised learning opportunities to ensure all students move forward and improve. This year, students have performed well in formalised assessment weeks, exams, NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy – Year 7 & 9) and OLNA (Online Literacy & Numeracy Assessment - Year 10). Teachers continuously analyse these assessments, so the curriculum can be adjusted to cater to our students’ needs

The Semester 1 reports will be mailed home prior to the end of this term. These are a valuable indicator on how your child is progressing with assessments and their learning. Please discuss with your child their progress and support them with their learning. Reports should be used to plan for improvement and build better results in Semester 2. Parents who attended the Year 10-12 Parents’ Night on 10 June found it valuable to discuss with teachers ways in which their child could improve. If you were unable to attend or you are a Year 7 to 9 parent, please do not hesitate to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the teacher concerned as they are happy to support students in their learning.

Transitions
Year 6 to Year 7
In preparation for the transition of Year 6 students to Busselton Senior High School, we will be running ‘taster’ days for Year 6 students from West Busselton, Busselton and Geographe Primary Schools. Activities will include cooking, woodwork, bingo, sport and science lessons. It is hoped that all students who attend will feel more comfortable in a High School setting next year. Year 6 students will also receive a separate additional transition day later this year. Enrolment packages will be given out to students by the end of the term.

Year 10 to Year 11
Year 10’s will begin their course counselling to select their pathways for Year 11 and 12. This is an important time for these students as the decisions that are made this year will impact on their chance of graduation and a future career path. Busselton Senior High School has a number of courses to select from which will allow students to progress to their post-secondary destination. We have a sound breadth of ATAR courses that include Physics, Chemistry, Human Biology, Biology, Visual Arts, Physical Education Studies, Geography, History, Music, English and all Mathematics courses including Specialist Mathematics. A Certificate IV Course in Nursing Preparation is also available. These offerings satisfy the prerequisites for any university course. Our expert teachers ensure that students picking the ATAR pathway will achieve the mark they require. Over the past two years, every ATAR student who has applied for university has been accepted. Our VET program is considered a ‘Best Practice Model’ and last year we were recognised as the ‘VET School of the Year’ in Western Australia. Students have an opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Engineering, Building and Construction, Business and Sport Recreation. Students selecting these pathways will also be involved in a work placement. If you have any queries about enrolling in these pathways, please call the school.

Finally I would like to say good luck to all the students who are representing our school at Country Week this year. This event is an opportunity to represent the school with pride and test your sporting abilities against some high-class opposition. Additionally, I hope students enjoy the REAL activities in Weeks 10 and 11 and the Year 9 Canberra Trip. Attending excursions demonstrates that students are showing Respect, displaying Empathy, Striving to Achieve and are committed to their Learning. Decisions on whether students are eligible are based on the REAL attributes in the Semester 1 Reports. Students need to have attended 90% of the term.

Term 3 begins for students on Tuesday, 21  July.

Kind Regards,

Dainon Couzic

Principal's Report August 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
I would like to thank all staff, students and parents for their efforts and support of Busselton Senior High School last semester. The eleven- week Term 2 did deliver some challenges, but there were also a number of events that need to be celebrated.
Celebrations
Week 11 last term, our Senior School Students participated in Country Week, a week-long sporting event in Perth. BSHS won the B- Division Girl‘s Volleyball and the Boy‘s Soccer finished 3rd in B-Division. I had an opportunity to attend Country Week this year. I spoke at the schools farewell assembly about respect, specifically =displaying sportsmanship during all events‘. I can wholeheartedly state that our students represented the values of Busselton Senior High School exceptionally well. A big thank you to all our staff involved in the organisation and giving up of their time. Ms Smith, who was Manager for the first time, did an outstanding job and was well supported by Mr Gray, Ms Harding, Mr Goldsmith, Mr Cockburn, Ms Trott and Mr Hoffman, a parent who kindly volunteered to coach the boys‘ Basketball.
Our Year 9 students experienced an amazing trip to our nation‘s capital, Canberra. Students visited Parliament House, various museums and enjoyed some downhill fun on the ski slopes. I was touched to hear our students, Issac Whiteside and Sophie Offer, laid a wreath at the last post ceremony held at the Australian War Memorial. This event was streamed live over the Internet, so our school and parents were able to watch this great example of students showing respect. Once again our students represented the school exceptionally well. For a trip like this to be successful it does rely on a number of staff being involved; a big thank you to Ms Down the trip organiser, Mr Martain, Ms Edwards and Mr Wall who ensured our students had a memorable time.
Congratulations to all the students who attended the R.E.A.L reward excursions. These students have showed Respect, displayed Empathy, strived to Achieve and endeavoured to Learn. Thank you to all staff involved with the organisation and supervision of the excursions. For those students who unfortunately were unable to attend, Term 3 is the time to reflect and improve your standing, to allow you to attend the REAL excursions at the end of the year. I would like to remind parents that all students are assessed on the REAL attributes in the Interim, Semester 1 and Semester 2 Reports.
Finally, two outstanding Busselton Senior High School students, Barbara Featherstone and D‘Arne Wilde have been awarded the Australian Vocational Student Prize for 2014. This prestigious award recognises students who have excelled in their senior secondary studies while undertaking vocational education and training at school. Both girls worked very hard and were ably supported by our VET staff. I would like to congratulate all involved.
Semester 2
Semester 1 reports were sent home at the end of last term. These will have provided a snapshot of how your child is progressing in 2015. For those parents who were unable to attend the parent‘s evening, please do not hesitate to contact your child‘s teachers to discuss strategies they can use to improve in Semester 2. The goal is for all students to be engaged in their learning in order to achieve the best results they can by the end of the year.
Expectations
The beginning of Semester 2 is a time to reinforce the high expectations of all students whilst attending BSHS. I wish to reaffirm that fighting, bullying, verbal abuse and harassment of others is completely unacceptable at Busselton Senior High School. Our classrooms must remain safe, productive environments that cultivate our students and their learning. For this to happen, students must adhere to our R.E.A.L attributes. A copy of this REAL matrix can be found in our newsletter. All staff at BSHS are committed to supporting you and your child to ensure they reach their potential. Please take the time to go through these expectations as it is important we work in partnership to support your child‘s learning.
Year 10
It is the time of year when students begin selecting their Senior School pathways. The school has a great selection of ATAR and VET courses that will set students up post BSHS. Subject selection and course counselling can be a stressful time for students, especially if they did not receive the grades they were expecting in Semester 1. I can assure you that every student will be counselled on an individual basis with parental involvement to ensure they are given every opportunity to select a pathway that suits their interests and abilities. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the remainder of the year at the various events BSHS has planned.

Kind Regards,

Principal's Report September 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Busselton Senior High School Walks for Tenderfeet
On Friday, 4 September, over 400 of our students and staff participated in a walk in the community to raise money for Tenderfeet. This event was driven by our Student Executive. I have been amazed at their level of leadership, organisation and the interpersonal skills they have demonstrated throughout this fundraising endeavour. Tenderfeet is an organisation led by Craig Garratt and raises money to support a school in Kibera, a suburb of Niarobi in Kenya, where the life expectancy is 30 Years of age. One in five students won’t live to five years of age. As Principal of BSHS, I am so impressed and proud of how our students have taken this cause to heart and engaged in an issue that is beyond our shores. Linking this cause to the curriculum has given students a global understanding of some serious issues that affect the world. Our students participated in the walk with great pride and represented the school exceptionally well in the community. They arrived back at school, where they attended a cultural assembly, had the opportunity to sample ‘ugali’ (the staple food) and witness some outstanding drumming performances. In an amazing effort, the school raised over $4000 for Tenderfeet. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the student executive, the Busselton students and staff for their hard work to ensure the day was a success. I would like to thank Mr Holt; with his passion and drive, he inspired the students and made sure they were supported throughout the effort. This is a worthwhile cause and I urge our school community to visit the Tenderfeet website for more information - http://tenderfeetkids.org/

BSHS win a number of Queens Cup Categories
Our specialist Music program has been extremely busy this term, recently performing at the Perth Jazz Festival. They have also competed at the Queen’s Cup competition, scooping a number of awards:
Over 31 individual, duo and party awards including the overall Woodwind performer for the whole competition; Flynn Passamani.
Novice Concert Band Winner
C Grade Concert Band Winner
Congratulations to all the students who competed. We are very proud of you and you have represented your school with outstanding results. Thank you to Music staff; Ms Cooper, Mrs Parkinson, Miss Eastland and Mr Duhig for the time and effort they devote daily to ensure our students perform to the best of their ability. Finally, I would like to thank all of our Music parents and the Music Support Group who attended the various events, rehearsals and performances.

Mobile Phones at BSHS
With the growth of technology in society and the prevalence of mobile phones as the primary form of communication, staff at BSHS understand they are needed by students to be able to contact their parents. However, many students have failed to follow the ‘acceptable usage’ policy that was signed on enrolment at the school. I wish to reiterate that students are allowed to have mobile phones at school, provided they conform to the acceptable usage guidelines. The main points are listed below:

At no time during class are students to have mobile phones visible; they must be switched off during class.
Students are solely responsible for the security of their phone and accept the risk associated with them being stolen or damaged.
Phones are not to be used to harass or threaten other students at any time (SMS, calls, email).
Phones must not be used to hamper staff in the course of their duties or film other students or staff.

The staff at BSHS will always take the educative approach and discuss with students their actions in regards to their mobile phone usage. However, the policy does state that confiscation, a letter home or suspension may occur if the guidelines are not followed. We ask that parents support the school in assisting us with teaching the students the correct way to use mobile phones so it does not affect their learning. If you have any concerns or questions about these guidelines, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Year 10 Course Selections
Year 10 interviews for Senior School course selections are currently underway. These interviews are an important part of the selection process and ensure the right pathway is chosen for the student.  BSHS has a number of excellent Senior School pathways to cater to students’ interests and needs. These include:
ATAR Pathways for entrance into University: Includes Physics, Chemistry, English, Maths and Maths Specialist, Human Biology and Biology, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education Studies.
Certificate II Business, Certificate IV Nursing Preparation
Manufacturing Industry Studies – Certificate II Engineering
Manufacturing Industry Studies – Certificate II Building and Construction

For more information about available courses, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
I hope you all have happy and safe Term 3 holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone in fourth term come October.

Principal's Report November 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Farewell to our Year 12s
I would like to congratulate the graduating class of 2015. This is an important time for you that marks the culmination of 12 years of education, exams, study, work placement, of completing projects and friendships. Graduating from BSHS demonstrates that our students can set goals and work towards achieving them. I wish all of you the very best for the future and I look forward to hearing about your achievements in the years to come. To the parents who are leaving BSHS, thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children; your support and contribution to the school has been so valuable to us. You will always be an important part of our community. The graduation was a very special night that showcased our students and the community of BSHS. I would like to thank all staff at BSHS for their hard work in the organisation of the event. I would also like to thank staff for the organisation of the activities leading up to the night: Staff v Students Soccer, Dress Up Day, Breakfast and the Fashion Parade. It allowed our students to celebrate in a mature and respectful manner. The entire school community should be proud of our Year 12?s achievement.
Other Celebrations
Our Specialised Music Program delivered an outstanding performance befitting the End of Year concert for 2015. It was evident that there were countless hours of rehearsals, both individually and the band, to be able to perform at such a superb level. Congratulations to all staff and students involved. I would also like to thank the school community, in particular the Music Support Group. Finally, I would like to congratulate Ms Shade, Ms Mutch, Ms McDonald and the students from Geographe Training who were finalists in two categories at the State Mental Health Good Outcomes Awards for 2015. They work tirelessly for their students and this is a welcome recognition for all that they do. A number of students attended the awards ceremony and represented the school exceptionally well at the very formal high tea that was attended by the Minister and other members of parliament.
School Alumni
I would like to welcome our School Alumni, who will be receiving this newsletter for the first time. Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far; however, with over 50 years of history, we hope to greatly increase the number of members. The purpose of the Alumni is to provide an avenue for people to reconnect with the school. You will notice in this newsletter that there is a dedicated section for the Alumni where an ex-student or staff member will be profiled. This newsletter profile is Heather Carroll, the current School Board Chair of Busselton Senior High School. It is hoped in the future to organise an event to bring people together. Finally, if you are having a school reunion, please mention our alumni to other past students. They can to sign up at:
https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/BSHSAlumni
I invite you to promote your reunion either by our website or newsletter. To make further contact with the school or provide any feedback please do not hesitate to contact the school on 9754 9333 or email the school via the website.

We are now in our final term for 2015. BSHS requests, and greatly appreciates, the support from parents concerning adherence to the school dress code. As we are now moving into the summer months it is anticipated that inappropriate jumpers and other non-uniform items should not be seen on school grounds. Processes are in place to ensure all students wear the correct uniform. Uniform is important as it establishes and promotes a sense of team and pride for BSHS both inside and outside the school.

There are still a number of events to complete Term 4:
Year 12 will sit their final exams and we wish them the best of luck.
Year 7-10 will be undertaking their assessment weeks.
A Year 7-10 REAL reward excursions
BSHS Swimming Carnival
The final assemblies for the remaining Year Groups will also occur and I hope a number of parents will be in attendance.

An open public board meeting will be conducted on Thursday 19 November. Between 5.00 and 6.00pm. All members of the school community are welcome to attend, ask questions and learn about the School Board's role at BSHS.

As our school year rapidly draws to a close I am keen for the above special activities and all lessons in classrooms to focus on enriching student learning and positive behaviour. I would like us all to finish the year positively, looking toward 2016 with an optimistic air within the school and the wider community.

Kind regards,

Heather Carroll & Tom Tuffin celebrating Mr Tuffin’s final year of tenure on the school board we thank Mr. Tuffin for his commitment to our school, with a wood work design by Mr Dave Douglas.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

The 2015 school year is drawing to a close. It has been a busy and exciting year for us all and our first year as an Independent Public School. There have been a number of key achievements that demonstrate Busselton Senior High School's successful progression forward:
. Successful transformation to an Independent Public School.
. School Council transition to a School Board.
. New School Business Plan was ratified and implementation of many key strategies has begun.
. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) expectations (R.E.A.L: Respect, Empathy, Achievement and Learning) have been put into operation and is having a positive effect on the school environment.
. Ensured a successful transition of two cohorts (Year 6 and 7) into High School.
. Successfully managed the new Department of Education funding model to ensure all students are catered for.
. BSHS were finalists in two categories at the State Mental Health Good Outcomes Awards for 2015.
. Multiple Queen's Cup Music Trophies.
. School Alumni Initiated – if you haven't signed up, link is https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/BSHSAlumni
. A New school uniform which will be ready for collection for incoming students in 2016.

There have been numerous camps, excursions, a graduation, excellence assemblies, concerts, sporting competitions, carnivals and other extracurricular activities that have added value to the students' lives at BSHS.
However, the most important aspect of Busselton Senior High School, the teaching of our students to ensure they learn and achieve, has improved markedly. Our NAPLAN results all show positive trends and I expect our Attainment Rate (Cert II Completion and an ATAR over 55) to increase significantly. Our depth and breadth of course offerings have improved, resulting in an increase in student numbers. Our teachers have been outstanding and played an integral part in these positive improvements. I thank them for their professionalism, their willingness to ensure every child strives to achieve and for their support of the strategic directions of the school. You should all feel very proud of what has been accomplished in 2015.
I would also like to thank the BSHS school community. The School Board, under the guidance of our Chair Ms Heather Carroll, is now the key decision making body that is driving the school forward. Thank you to the P&C and Music Support Group, who spend hours organising our events and support the school and students through fundraising. I would also like to acknowledge education assistants, administration staff, gardeners and cleaners for the efficient operation and supportive role you play in BSHS. Finally, I would like to thank our parents for your support. It is important that we build upon, and continue to form partnerships to assist in the learning of our students.

As school staff we are excited about where BSHS is heading. In the forefront of our minds is the achievement of our vision:
‘Busselton Senior High School will be known as an outstanding, inclusive school that effectively serves the needs of our community. High standards will be achieved by excellence in teaching and learning, developing respectful relationships and delivering curriculum that challenges and wholly engages all of our students'.

In 2016, as a school community, we will work towards this vision by building upon the work and strategies that have been implemented this year in line with our four school priorities:
Priority 1 – Successful Students
Priority 2 – Excellence in Teaching and Leadership
Priority 3 – Engaging the School Community
Priority 4 – A Safe, Supportive and Inclusive Learning Culture

Finally, to our students, it is a pleasure to have you attend the school. On many occasions I have been extremely proud of what you have achieved and how you conduct yourself. You will receive your reports shortly, if not already. It is important that you remember the report is a summary of where you have been - it is not the end game. You must reflect on this report, use the information to plan for improvement and build even better results in the years ahead.

Once again, thank you to the entire school community for your support during 2015. Best wishes to all of you. May the festive season bring you much joy and keep you safe. I look forward to seeing you all in 2016.

Kind regards,
Dainon Couzic, PRINCIPAL

Principals Report March 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Welcome to the 2016 school year; one that promises
to be exciting and eventful at BSHS. I would like to
formally welcome all of our new students and their
families as they begin their educational journey at our
school. The Year 7 students have settled in very well;
this is a testament to your child?s resilience, your
support and the staff from both the Primary School
and High School, who have ensured their smooth
transition to secondary education.
Results
Busselton Senior High School is an institution that
encourages high standards in teaching and learning.
Our 2015 results clearly demonstrate we are catering
to all students in the ATAR and VET Pathways. 93%
Student achievement of Certificate II, the best in five
years. Our attainment rate of 82% reflects that we
have sustained the improvements made in 2014.
Congratulations to all staff and students involved and I
wish our graduates all the best in the future. Our
Attainment Rate is the major area that we will be
focusing on in the immediate future. This is a
measure of how many students completed a
Certificate II qualification or gained a 55% and above
ATAR. If a student achieves either of these they will be
able to enter university or transition into TAFE or a
career. This means our students have a definite
pathway they can follow when they finish secondary
school. BSHS will be striving to improve our rate to
above 90% in the coming years.
These are wonderful results; however, it is now time to
look to 2016 and the challenges that will no doubt
unfold as the year progresses. The school will rise to
these challenges, and the class of 2016 will also
achieve some sterling results.
Staffing
As an Independent Public School we continue to
select and appoint our own staff. I?d like to take this
opportunity to welcome and introduce the following
new staff members:
- Kelsey Della Bosca (Maths)
- Janelle Di Giovanni (HASS)
- Holly Feng, Emily Purvis and Lily Stieler (English)
- Lauren Johnston (HPE)
- Glenn Adams (D&T)
- Tobias Falls (IT Support)
- Gemma Topp (HPE/Science)
- Bindi Evans (Laboratory Technician)
- Kathy Dickson (Student Service Support)
- Cherise Woodhams (Student Service Support)
In 2016 we also welcome back: Leshaye Wisewould
(HPE) and Kirsty Laverty (HASS).
Our School
I spoke to all students at the start of the year about
what it means to be a student at Busselton Senior
High School. It means that:
Our students are proud of being at our school.
Our students wear their school uniform with honour.
Our students support and encourage each other to
be the best they can be.
As a school community we are true to our R.E.A.L
Values, instilling them in your daily life. Students at
BSHS do this by:
Showing Respect by listening and following staff
instructions, using appropriate language and
manners and greeting each other positively;
Having Empathy by showing acceptance and
understanding of others and taking a stand against
bullying;
Striving to Achieve by performing tasks to the best
of our ability and seeking feedback to improve;
Endeavoring to Learn: by being engaged in
classroom activities and coming prepared and
equipped to class.
For 2016 every student?s goal is to become a true
BSHS student. Most of our students work rigorously to
create a safe, enriching learning environment for
themselves and others. It is disappointing when
certain behaviours let us down. It is important for all of
our students to reflect on their contribution to BSHS.
Students must work hard to improve behavior and
consider their actions. Certain behaviours prevent
students from being the best they can be and limit
opportunities to succeed in life beyond school. Such
behaviors affect others? learning and growth. This is
unacceptable. I will go into more detail about the
schools expectations throughout the year in
assemblies. Please take the time to read through the
Positive Behaviour Support (REAL) Matrix (found in
this newsletter) and discuss with child what it is to be
a BSHS student.
The staff at BSHS look forward to maintaining positive
relationships with parents as we engage students in
their learning during 2016. There are some exciting
times ahead at BSHS; I thank you in advance for your
support and I look forward to seeing you at school
events throughout the year.
Kind Regards, Dainon Couzic

Principal's Report April 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

The ‘mini’ holiday this term has meant the first part of the year has flown by. Most students have responded well to the expectations I outlined in the previous issue of ‘School Speak’ which included being proud of this great school, wearing uniform with honour, supporting other students and instilling our R.E.A.L. values. It is important students are reminded of these expectations throughout the school year and I thank you all in advance for assisting the school with this initiative.

Beach Carnival, School Ball and Harmony Day
The annual Beach Carnival was held at Meelup Beach on 4 March with over 480 students in attendance. This is a unique and amazing day that allows students to integrate with all year levels to build upon our positive school culture. All students participated and a sense of teamwork was very evident throughout all year groups. I was extremely proud to be a member of the BSHS Community; I know staff and students shared the same feelings. Thank you to all the parents who turned up on the day. Congratulations to Naturaliste who took out the day’s honours, and to Wonnerup received the most R.E.A.L tickets on the day.

On 19 March the annual Year 12 School Ball was held. The theme was ‘Winter Wonderland’ and the students presented themselves in a very elegant and mature way on the evening. It was perhaps one of the most enjoyable balls I have had the privilege of attending. Behaviour was exemplary and students appreciated the efforts of staff in preparing, organising and participating in the event. I am particularly Impressed with the way the 2016 Year 12 cohort has started the year. Time and again they have demonstrated great qualities of leadership, compassion and a very cohesive attitude; very accepting of diversity.

Thursday, 24 March marked our inaugural school celebration of Harmony Day. It was an outstanding event that celebrated the diversity of our school and embodied our values of ‘Respect’ and ‘Empathy’. I was also impressed with outstanding leadership of our student council to ensure the day was such a huge success.

Interim Report and Parents Evening Years 7-9
By the time you read this newsletter you would have received either an interim report for Term 1 or attended the Year 7 to 9 Parents evening. This report provides a clear snap shot of how your child is performing both academically and behaviourally in line with our R.E.A.L (Respect, Empathy, Achieve and Learn) values. Please take the time to go through this report with your child and set some goals together on the areas that need improvement in Term 2. Should you have any questions or require advice on how to best support your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher listed in the report.

P & C Update
Thank you to all parents and community members who attended the recent P & C meeting. We are please to announce the P & C Committee position are held by:
President - Pamela Webster
Vice President - Melanie McCurry
Treasurer - Linda Kusal
Secretary - Jennifer Russel
School Board Representative: Andrew Ingrey
Executive Committee: Vicky Dawson, Julie Ingrey and Rebecca Wilkinson,

ANZAC Ceremony
The 2016 BSHS ANZAC Ceremony will take place on 7 April in the school gymnasium. This is a significant event for our school and to all Australians as the First World War contributed to defining us as a nation. The ceremony will begin at 10.00 am and will last approximately one hour. All parents and citizens are welcome to attend to commemorate this important occasion.

I hope you enjoy a safe and restful Term 1 holiday with students return ready for Term 2 which begins on Wednesday 27 April.

Principal's Report May 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
The last week of Term 1 and the start of Term 2 has been extremely busy with many events to note:
? ANZAC Assembly;
? Interhouse Athletics Carnival;
? Interschool Athletics;
? Australian Tennis Championships: Mr Cockburn selected Coach of the WA School Boys Tennis Team who finished third at the National Championships.
? REAL Reward Activities for year 7-10 students;
? Cine-snaps: students attended a masterclass;
I would like to personally congratulate all those who attended and participated. Thank you to all the staff involved in these events; ensuring that all of our students are able to embrace experiences that will enhance their learning beyond the classroom.
Year 7 and 8 Homework Lunch
The school will be introducing a targeted initiative entitled "Homework Lunch". This is in response to an ever-increasing number of students who are not completing the set work in class. By not completing this work, students are not engaging in class; ultimately improving learning and level of achievement.
At BSHS we believe that non-achievement is not an option for our students. Year Seven and Eight Homework Lunch will be trialed throughout Term Two. Homework Lunch will operate using the following process and will involve Year Seven and Eight English and Mathematics classes:
? Students will be checked off at the end of each lesson on whether they have completed their work.
? A list will be compiled, and students who have not completed set work will be informed on Friday that they must attend Homework Lunch.
? Parents will also be notified on the Friday via SMS that their child has work they need to complete.
? Students will attend Homework Lunch for the following week until the work is completed.
I want to be clear that „Homework Lunch? is not a punishment. Expert teachers will be available to assist students with one-on-one instruction. It will also allow the teaching staff to identify other areas that may require work for students to succeed.
By increasing their work completion, student learning will be enhanced. This will ultimately contribute to the future successes of those students. If certain students continue to attend 'Homework Lunch' on a regular basis, we will endeavor to work with parents to support your child by way of case management plans and individual education plans. I thank you for your support with this initiative.
Student Assessments
There are a number of assessments during Term Two. The assessments will provide a snapshot of your child?s current performance. This allows teachers to plan appropriate lessons and provide feedback to your child to further progress their learning. Year 10 Students have completed their Online Literacy Numeracy Assessment (OLNA). Students have the opportunity to undertake this assessment twice a year in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students will be unable to graduate unless they pass OLNA. We will be providing these results in the coming weeks. Senior School exams have been completed and will provide students with an idea of how they are progressing with their university-bound courses. Year 9 and Year 7 NAPLAN has also been completed and results will be sent out later in the year. Finally, there will be assessment weeks for all year groups in Week 5 (Years 9/10) and Week 6 (Years 7/8). It is important that your child begins to revise for these upcoming assessments. Semester One reports will be sent home in Week 10.
I thank you once again for your support. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 9754 9333.

Kind Regards, Dainon Couzic.

Principal's Report June 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Term II has been extremely busy with two Minister visits, our ANZAC ceremony, Music Concerts, Assessments, Year 6 to 7 transition activities and environmental enhancement excursions. However, it has not finished yet with a number of key events such as the Canberra Trip, Country Week, Borneo Trip and REAL Activities/Rewards still to occur.
Assessment and Reporting
During this term, students have performed well during the formalised assessment weeks, exams, NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy – Years 7 & 9) and OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment – Year 10). Year 12 General Course students also participated in an Externally Set Task for the first time across the state (EST). Teachers continuously analyse these assessments (and others) so the curriculum can be adjusted to cater to each students’ needs. The Semester I reports will be mailed home prior to the end of this term. These are valuable indicators on how your child is progressing with their assessments and learning. Please discuss with your child their progress, and support them with their learning. Reports should be used to plan for improvement and build better results in Semester II. Parents who attended the Year 10-12 Parents Night found it valuable to discuss with teachers ways in which their child could improve. If you were unable to attend or you are a Year 7 to 9 parent, please do not hesitate to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the teacher concerned, as they are more than happy to support student learning.
Year 10 to Year 11
Year 10 will begin their course counselling to select their pathways for Year 11 and 12. This is an important time for these students, as the decisions that are made this year will impact on their chance of graduation and forge a future career path. Busselton Senior High School has a number of courses to select from that will allow students to progress to their post-secondary destination. Our expert teachers ensure that students selecting ATAR pathways will achieve the mark they require; over the last two years, every ATAR student that has applied for university has been accepted. Students have an opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Engineering, Building and Construction, Business, Kitchen Operations and Sport Recreation. Students selecting these pathways will also be involved in work placement opportunities. If you have any enquiries about enrolling in these pathways, please call the school.
Year 7/8 Homework Lunch and Kick-start
In the previous newsletter I outlined to parents a new initiative; the Year 7 and 8 Homework Lunch. This was being implemented in response to an ever-increasing number of students who are not completing the set work in class. It has been operating using the following process:
Each week students will be checked off at the end of each lesson as to whether they have completed their work.
- A list will be compiled, and students who have not completed the set work will be informed on Friday that they must attend.
- Parents will also be notified on the Friday via SMS that their child has work they need to complete.
- On Monday, the students will attend Homework Lunch for the rest of the week until the work is completed.
I want to reiterate that ‘Homework Lunch’ is not a punishment. Expert teachers have been available to assist students with one-on-one instruction if they do not understand the work.
The students have been doing very well and the initiative has been an overwhelming success with the number of students having been attended reduced by up to 60%. To continue to build upon this success Year 7 and 8 Humanities and Science Classes will now be involved starting Term III. Furthermore, students that have been identified as not understanding the work that is being provided in class will be catered for by a new program entitled Kick-Start. This specialised class will be conducted between 8.35 – 9.02am as a part of form. It will be staffed by expert Maths and English teachers and breakfast will be provided. This will ensure that no child falls behind in their education. If you have any questions relating to either Homework Lunch or Kick-Start, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Finally, I would like to say good luck to all the students who will be representing the school at the many events we have coming up. Country Week is an opportunity to represent the school with pride and test your sporting abilities against some high-class opposition. I also hope students enjoy the REAL activities in Week 10. Attending the REAL excursions demonstrates that students are showing Respect, displaying Empathy, Striving to Achieve and committed to their Learning. Decisions on whether students are eligible are based on the REAL attributes in the Semester I reports. Students also need to have attended at above 90% of the time. I also hope the Year 9 Canberra trip and the trip to Borneo to undertake volunteer work are experiences that will be remembered for years to come for our students.
Term III begins for students on Tuesday 19 July.
Kind Regards,
Dainon Couzic

A Word From Our Principal - August 2016

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
I would like to start by thanking all staff, students and parents for your efforts and support of BSHS last Semester.
Term 2 is always challenging, especially during winter, but there were a number of events that need to be celebrated.
CELEBRATIONS
Country Week
In Week 10 of last term, our Senior School Students participated in Country Week, a week-long sporting event in Perth. There were a number of outstanding results:
? Our country week debating team finished second in their division.
? Kaleb Peters and Maddie Bleach made their individual finals.
? Both soccer teams battled through injuries but did not give up.
? The Girls' Basketball team finished second to Manjimup in the B division final losing by only two points.
? The Boys' basketball won the A division Final by one point over Newton Moore.
This is an outstanding effort; it is the first time BSHS has won an A division since 2006. This demonstrates to all of us how a goal was set in 2014 to win this final in 2016. It was achieved by the players working together as a team.
BSHS finished second overall in the second tier cup, which is an outstanding outcome. I wish to thank all the staff involved for their effort and support of our students.
Many after-school hours were put into preparing our teams and during the week our coaches worked around the clock to ensure a safe, supportive environment was provided for all our participants.
Year 9 Canberra Trip
Our Year 9 students experienced an amazing trip to our nation’s capital, Canberra. They visited Parliament House, various museums and enjoyed some downhill fun on the ski slopes. Once again, our students represented the school exceptionally well.
Borneo Trip
Another trip during the holidays was to Borneo with our students volunteering in a local village. Talking with the students on their return, it was evident they had learned so much, experienced new challenges and enjoyed immersing themselves in another culture.
For trips to Borneo and Canberra to be successful, it does rely on a number of staff giving their time. I would like to thank all staff involved in these trips, who ensured our students had a memorable and rewarding time.
Sheerluck Holmes Production
The BSHS whole school production of ‘Sheerluck Holmes’ was an outstanding success with a number of humorous moments. I am consistently amazed at how talented our students are; their performances reflected the hard work to learn lines, attend rehearsals and develop their characters.
The Arts and Music Departments and other staff volunteers have worked tirelessly to direct and produce a marvellous production. A special mention must go to Lee Cooper for her superlative direction of the play.
Drain Rehabilitation
Through the leadership of our School Captain, Patrick Donovan, the school has undertaken the challenge to rehabilitate a section of the Queen Elizabeth drain next to the school each year.
All Year 7 and 8 students were involved in planting over 1000 plants and constructing a pathway. They have done an amazing job.
Thank you to all staff involved.
R.E.A.L Reward Excursions
Finally, congratulations to all the students who attended the R.E.A.L reward excursions. These students have shown Respect, displayed Empathy, strived to Achieve and endeavoured to Learn. Thank you to all staff involved with the organisation and supervision of the excursions. For those students who were unable to attend, Term 3 is the time to reflect and improve your standing, to allow you to attend the REAL excursions at the end of the year. I would like to remind parents that all students are assessed on the REAL attributes in the Interim, Semester 1 and Semester 2 Reports.
SEMESTER TWO
Semester 1 reports were sent home at the end of last term. These will have provided a snapshot of how your child is progressing in 2016. For those parents who were unable to attend the Parent’s Evening, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers to discuss strategies they can use to improve in Semester 2. The goal for all students is to be engaged in their learning in order to achieve the best results they can by the end of the year.
Expectations
The beginning of Semester 2 is a time to reinforce the high expectations of all students while attending BSHS. A copy of this REAL matrix can be found in this newsletter. All staff at BSHS are committed to supporting you and your child to ensure they reach their potential. Please take the time to go through these expectations as it is important we work in partnership to support your child’s learning.
Year 10
It is the time of year when students begin selecting their Senior School Pathways. The school has a great selection of ATAR and VET courses that will set students up post BSHS. Subject selection and course counselling can be a stressful time for students, especially if they did not receive the grades they were expecting in Semester 1. I can assure you that every student will be counselled on an individual basis, with parental involvement, to ensure they are given every opportunity to select a pathway that suits their interests and ability. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
New Roof and Air-conditioning
I am happy to report that after 60 years, BSHS has a brand new roof and every classroom is air conditioned just in time for Summer. These projects will have a positive impact on the learning environment, allowing students to learn in more comfortable conditions.
All the best for Semester 2 and I look forward to seeing you throughout the remainder of the year at the various events BSHS has planned.
Kind regards, Dainon Couzic - Principal
